At the “Precision in a Complex World” conference at the University of Brescia, I had the opportunity to attend a keynote by Prof. Lee Hood, one of the scientists whose vision helped shape the origins of COSBI and, one of the fathers of the field of systems medicine.
Prof. Hood highlighted the importance of moving beyond the genome alone, integrating genomic information with the phenome and other layers of biological data to better understand health and disease.
He also discussed the growing potential of oligo-nucleotides therapeutics and the increasingly important role of Artificial Intelligence in extracting knowledge from complex biomedical data and supporting the process from understanding disease to drug discovery and development.
More than twenty years after COSBI was founded, it was particularly meaningful for me to hear these ideas directly from someone so closely connected with its scientific origins.
A great reminder of how the challenge at the heart of precision medicine remains as relevant as ever: how do we transform increasingly complex biological data into actionable knowledge?
