Luca Marchetti, Head of the Computational Biology group at COSBI, is invited on 8th July 2022 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris at the opening ceremony of IYBSSD 2022 – International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development. Together with scientists from all over the world Luca Marchetti presents COSBI contribution to the discussion of the ever-growing impact that basic science shares with other relevant players in the achievement of the UN 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. With regards to this topic COSBI can provide a leading contribution to the goal of increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality and also in the future efforts needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and emerging health issues to improve the quality of life at all ages. Thanks to our computational approach and to the high relevance of our projects in partnership with leading partners, COSBI aims at identifying and optimizing novel therapies for both rare diseases as Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs) and common diseases as Diabetes, obesity and cancer, wide-spread infectious diseases as SARS-CoV-2 and the ones affecting developing countries as Tuberculosis, pediatric and age-related neurodegenerative diseases as Alzheimer, Parkinson, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and for preventing problems during pregnancy as Neural Tube Defects (NTDs)
